What do we offer?

Our division offers a 2- week rotation for MS4 medical students in the division. During their time, medical students learn more about clinical ultrasound while getting lectures, participating in simulation sessions and scanning at the patients bedside.

  • Clinical Ultrasound in Emergency Medicine Rotation

    Rotation Overview:

This rotation provides medical students with comprehensive training in the use of clinical ultrasound within the emergency department. Students will gain hands-on experience and learn the principles and applications of ultrasound in diagnosing and managing a variety of acute conditions.

    Rotation Objectives:

    • To understand the basic principles of ultrasound physics and instrumentation.

    • To develop proficiency in performing and interpreting focused emergency ultrasound exams.

    • To apply ultrasound skills in the diagnosis and management of common emergency conditions.

    • To integrate ultrasound findings into clinical decision-making processes.

    Duration:

    2 weeks

    Prerequisites:

    • Successful completion of non clinical medical school years.

    • Basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.

    Core Topics:

    1. Introduction to Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation:

      • Basic principles of ultrasound waves

      • Image acquisition and optimization

      • Machine settings and probe selection

    2. FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma):

      • Indications and techniques

      • Interpretation of findings

      • Clinical integration in trauma care

    3. Cardiac Ultrasound (Echocardiography):

      • Techniques for obtaining cardiac views

      • Assessment of cardiac function and pathology

      • Use in cardiac arrest and shock scenarios

    4. Abdominal Ultrasound:

      • Evaluation of the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, and aorta

      • Identification of free fluid, hydronephrosis, and aortic aneurysms

    5. Thoracic Ultrasound:

      • Assessment for pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and pulmonary edema

      • Lung ultrasound techniques and interpretation

    6. Procedural Guidance:

      • Ultrasound-guided vascular access (central and peripheral lines)

      • Ultrasound guidance for thoracentesis, paracentesis, and abscess drainage

    Learning Activities:

    • Didactic Sessions: Weekly lectures covering core topics and case discussions.

    • Hands-On Scanning: Supervised scanning sessions in the emergency department.

    • Simulation Labs: Practice on ultrasound simulators to hone technical skills.

    • Case Reviews: Review and discussion of interesting cases and ultrasound findings.

    • Assessments: Pre-rotation and post-rotation knowledge tests, skill evaluations, and feedback sessions.

    Evaluation:

Students will be evaluated based on their participation, technical skills, ability to interpret ultrasound images, and integration of ultrasound findings into clinical care. Feedback will be provided throughout the rotation, with a final evaluation at the end.

    Recommended Reading:

    • Book provided during rotation

    • Journal articles and online resources provided during the rotation

  • The schedule is 8 shifts, 1 reading shift and 2 US Conference Days from 1pm-5pm which includes simulation sessions, QA and journal club.

  • The faculty will include all the ultrasound faculty listed in TEAMS.

  • You should receive an email to access the entire curriculum and reading for the EM rotation under GME Curriculum.
